June 20, 2009 First Race Day - 3rd Place!
Team takes 3rd and 4th place...but who really beat who?
We had a great morning of time trials - 7 runs. Dennis and Jessica ran the Camaro through her
paces while Tyson ran his Nissan Skyline. We had some issues with the Camaro's tires hooking
up with the pavement, so we were unable to pull her hard out of the hole. The Camaro ran a solid
13.44 second pass at 105 MPH, while Tyson's Skyline ran a very impressive 97 MPH pass.
During eliminations, Tyson and Jessica must race each other for third place. The school camaro
up against Tyson's 1996 Skyline. The two racers write their times on their windows and approach
the staging lanes. Unknown to Jessica, the tower misreads the Camaro's window and posts
her time as a 14.00 instead of a 14.60.
The two cars leave the starting line and just over 14.5 seconds later they both cross the finish line,
1/4 of a mile from the start. The two racers have run very close to their selected times. According
to the time clock, Tyson's Skyline has just beaten the schools Camaro, or has it. Jessica now notices
that the time the tower had posted is 600th of a second less than she has written on her windshield.
Too late though, we cannot change what the tower had posted. We crunch the numbers from the
time chits and the Camaro had in reality beaten the Skyline.
We all learned a valuable lesson Saturday. Always check the time clock before entering the stage
lanes because once you stage the car, you have accepted the towers posted times.
A Great day was had by all.
